Mataking Island Resort Sabah Borneo Malaysia is a world class reef resort located in Semporna, a small district in east coast of Sabah Malaysian Borneo. During previous years Mataking island resort does not receive so many attention and still become less known holiday destination.

But things starting to change on middle of 2016 when photos of islands in Semporna became viral in social media especially Facebook and Pinterest.

Their findings bring them to information about Mataking island resort which is the farthest island resort in Semporna. The official name of this resort is Mataking Island Reef Dive Resort - aimed for scuba divers and non-divers visitors.

How To Get To Mataking Island Resort Semporna

1. If you travel from outside Malaysia or from Peninsular Malaysia you will need to land in Kota Kinabalu International Airport at first before you able to start your travel to Mataking island resort. This is because there is no direct flight route to Semporna. Kota Kinabalu international airport is the only international airport available in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. There is no direct flight to Semporna because Semporna has no airport and majority or airplanes only landed in Tawau airport.

2. The only airport available in Semporna is a small airport. The airport has been abondoned since around 1990's - not functiong as an airport until today but still being used by small airplane, also used by remote controlled aircraft enthusiasts and by local weather forecast department.

3. After you arrive in Kota Kinabalu you will need to take another flight route to Tawau airport, because Tawau airport is the closest available airport for you to travel to Semporna and to Mataking island. When you landed in Tawau airport you will need to take 1 hour land bus travel to Semporna city center. The travel duration from Tawau airport to Semporna city center will take about 1-1.5 hours depending on weather and traffic condition.

4. After you arrive in Semporna city center, to get to Mataking island resort you will need to take a boat ride to Mataking island. Travel from Semporna city center to Mataking island take about 40-55 minutes depending on weather and sea condition. 

5. Travel to Mataking island is only allowed during day time, from 6 AM 6 PM. No any other civillian boat allowed in the sea after 6:00 PM, or else you will be warned by local police enforcement. Security in the sea around Semporna is so tight.

6. Normally visitors will stay for more than 1 day in Mataking island resort. They stayed there for 3 days, 4 days up to 5 days. There is no maximum limit of how long you can stay. It all depends on your budget and what you want to do during holiday in Semporna.

What Things To Do In Mataking Island Resort

You might wonder what activities to do when travel to Mataking island? To enjoy holiday, of course! But what else to do while staying during several days holiday in Mataking? Here's some recommendation...

•  Snorkeling - most popular activities done by visitors. Sea water around Mataking island resort is super crystal clear. You can see the bottom of the ocean untul 15-20 meters deep from water surface. What to see during snorkeling? Reef fish and colorful coral reefs.

•  Scuba diving - there is a dive center in Mataking island resort. Dive center in Mataking island is affiliated with PADI (Professional Association Of Diving Instructors). If you travel to Mataking island to do scuba diving and to explore the underwater world around Mataking island, daily dive packages is available here. You can choose to do scuba diving 2 times in 1 day or 3 times in 1 day.

•  Sunset Viewing - sunset view from Mataking island resort is soooo amazing. You got to see it for yourself. 

•  Island Hopping, Visiting Other Islands in Semporna - from Mataking island you can go to other islands nearby for sightseeing or snorkeling. Recommended islands are Bohey Dulang island, Pom Pom island or Denawan island.

•  Kayaking near the beach. You can choose what type of kayak you want to ride in. Make sure you bring your camera.

•  Bonfire party on the beach - Sit together in camp fire during evening until late night.

•  Visiting Peacock Sanctuary - take a close look at this blue-green bird.

•  Visiting Turtle Hatchery Center in Mataking island, managed by marine biologist and dedicated conservation staffs.

•  Go to Core Gym Center - yes you can find a modern gym in an island resort. You can enjoy working out while enjoying panoramic view of blue Ocean to ease your mind during workout session

•  Birds Watching - if you love 'birding' activities you can hunt for birds around Mataking island by going up to observation tower or walking around the island near resort area.

• Walk Island To Island - during low tide you can walk on foot from Mataking Besar island (main island which resort is located) to Mataking Kecil (second island, much smaller island) which is only 500 meters apart. Pictures during this moment is magical.

If you are looking for budget travel but still want to go to Mataking island you can choose to go by joining a day trip package.

By joining day trip package to Mataking island your visiting time in Mataking island will be short as you need to catch up with time limie, but you still can take some pictures of your travel to Mataking island.
